Anti-Tehri Dam Protest

This is a very long protracted environment movement in India. The Tehri Dam project aimed at producing 2400 MG electricity to establish 140 industrial cities. Virendra Dutta Suklani took the leadership of Tehri Dam Opposition Committee and this movement lasts for decades. The main problems are seismic sensitivity of Godwal-Himalaya region and submergeof Tehri city. So, Sunderlal Bahuguna opposed the Tehri Dam project by repeatedly calling hunger strikes. First he called a 45 day long fast in the bank of river Bhagirathi appealing the P.V. Narasimha Rao government for the appointment of a review committee on the ecological impacts of the dam in 1995. Thereafter he went on another 74 day long fast during the Prime Ministership of H.D. Deve Gowda,who gave personal undertaking of a project review.

                           However, a case ran in the Supreme Court over a decade and then the work of Tehri Dam Project resumed and Sunderlal Bahuguna was arrested on 20th April,2001. Later on he was released in 2004,after the completion of Tehri Dam Project . Now, Tehri Dam in Uttarakhand is the tallest dam of India.
