Appiko Movement

Appiko Movement is related to forest based Environment Protection Movement. This movement was started in North Kannad, district in Karnataka. The forest is rich in natural resources. After independence the government started indiscriminate cutting of trees to increase revenue collection. So, a group of boys from the village Balegadde opposed the action of government. They invited Sundarlal Bahuguna. They hugged the trees and thereby the movement started. As a result the Bamboo forest used for handicraft and medicinal trees were saved.
