Chipko Movement, started in 1973, is an Indian Environment Protection Movement, which is famous all over the world. It was a movement to protect forest in the valley of river Alakananda and adjoining forest areas. This movement was headed by Sunderlal Bahuguna. This movement taught the local people about evil consequences of deforestation and later on Chipko Movement became a world wide environmental protection movement.
Bahuguna had spreaded awareness among the villagers how trees and forests play a vital role in maintaining the ecosystem of our environment. Later the women of Chamoli district started stopping the woodcutters from cutting the trees down by embracing the trees. Sunderlal Bahuguna also appealed for ban of cutting the trees to the then Prime Minister of India Mrs.Indira Gandhi . This appeal of Sundarlal Bahuguna resulted to ban the cutting of trees for 15 years in 1980.
